EDITORIAL: IV parties on

Anyone else seen the flyers that are being sent around telling students that there will be no party in Isla Vista this Halloween? Thought so. But how many any of you are actually changing your plans because of them? We’d bet a lot fewer hands went up that time.
The fact of the matter is, these flyers are not going to work. Besides being insulting and threatening; all they will cause is for the students who have decided I.V. is the place to be on Halloween to party even harder.
The Channels published a story on the aforementioned flyers in last week’s issue, and for those of you who have not seen the flyers, the content was fairly unpleasant.
The flyers warned students of what they would face if they chose I.V. as their party location this Halloween. There will be strict laws on drinking and music, not to mention increased fines, and the threat of spending a night in jail for any number of reasons.
The flyer has a condescending tone towards students, making us out to be animals who are just out on Halloween to wreak havoc on I.V. without a care to the safety of anyone else.
Agreed, there are the few bad apples out there who ruin the night for everyone. But for those of us who would like to get dressed up and have a good time, being spoken to like children is insulting and patronizing and is not going to make us any more likely to change our plans.
Isla Vista’s reputation for parties crosses borders. There are people who will fly in just to party here. Halloween this year is going to be no different than last year, and the year before, because you cannot break tradition–no matter how hard you come down with an iron fist.
Let’s have this year be the year we prove to foot patrol wrong. Let’s get dressed up, and have a good time, but give them nothing to do. Yes, go get a keg and be merry. But let’s keep those cups upside down on the street, keep the driving left to a sober friend and the urinating kept in the privacy of a bathroom.
The patronizing and insulting flyers do have a use however. Make sure you read them, be well informed of what laws are in place and the consequences if they are broken. Make sure visiting friends know too.
Prove to the UCSB officials who are convinced we are a bunch of morons who just want to break laws as soon as we get some booze in us that we are not. Prove that we are adults, who can think for ourselves and make the right decisions.
The party is very much still on, that hasn’t changed, but it’s time to make sure that they don’t feel the need to send out flyers next year.
