17th Annual Golf Classic on March 15

La Cumbre Country Club will host City College’s 17th annual Golf Classic fundraiser on March 15.

The fundraiser aids more than 400 student-athletes in 17 sports.

This year, its annual honoree is the Cottage Health System President and Corporate Executive Officer Ron Werft.

“It will be a great event to celebrate Mr. Werft’s important contributions to the college and the college centennial,” said Athletic Director Ellen O’Connor.

O’Connor said that Werft’s leadership has resulted in “critical” faculty funding from the Cottage Health System.

Cottage also offers hospital settings for students to practice their skills under the guidance of highly qualified staff.

“Their work has been of tremendous benefit to the college to improve the educational experience of students,” said O’Connor.

The fundraiser for Vaquero athletics starts with a four-person golf scramble.

It will have gifts and prizes awarded for shots closest to the pin, for the longest drive and for anyone who can manage a hole-in-one.

The fundraiser ends with a silent auction and raffle, followed by a chance to putt for $50,000 at 5 p.m.

The proceeds will go towards the costs of transportation, meal money for away contests, and game management costs.

The Golf Classic will also offer a chance to beat the ringer, ex-City College golf standout Victoria Alimonda. She finished second in the state in 2006 and helped the Vaqueros capture the state title.

Along with Werft, this year’s Golf Classic will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the founding of City College.

They will acknowledge the centennial in the tournament program.

Admission covers green fees, a luncheon, a cart, and a variety of tee prizes.
