To encourage community service, City College strives for a high number of volunteers to participate in this years United Way Day of Caring.
United Way of Santa Barbara County will host the 22nd Annual Day of Caring at 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. Providing an opportunity to give back to the community, lending a hand to local nonprofits with tasks such as painting, cleaning, gardening, food sorting, trash pickup and weeding.
The City College team has had a big impact on the event, with the annual guidance of Chair Dr. Paul Bishop and administrative assistant Lisa Lopez.
“We at SBCC take great pride in lending a hand and building a community through our commitment and efforts for community service,” Lopez said.
Over 225 participants gave back to the community last year. Pushing City College to the number one spot for its third consecutive year, out numbering their competitors, Westmont and UCSB.
The program is expecting even higher numbers this year. Their website promotes, “spirit and volunteerism for our local agencies, while demonstrating a strong community coming together to assist those in need.”
The volunteers will start the morning off at the 8 a.m. Kick-off Breakfast at Ben Page Youth Center located at 4540 Hollister Avenue. Then teams will disperse to different workshops throughout the county.
The City College team will work on their own campus project assigned by Mike Gonella, chair of the environmental horticulture department.
“Every year Mike organizes a great work party who engages in the maintenance and upgrades to the college’s prized Lifescape Gardens,” Douglas Hersh, dean of environmental horticulture said. “It’s always a great way to meet and work with new people while connecting deeply with our environment through direct personal experience. On top of that, it’s fun!”
