Cut your expenses and cure your budget

Student discounts and affordable prices for skin care, nail doctoring, and chemical treatments are available at City College’s cosmetology department in Goleta’s Magnolia Shopping Center.

“If you look at the price we have compared to other places, you will see that our services are a great deal. Especially for students,” said the dean of student services and cosmetology department Ben Partee.

The venue offers haircuts, pedicures, manicures, facials, waxes, deep conditioning, eye brow waxing, color filler, perms, weaves, and French braids that feature 10 percent drawbacks for students.

Prices range from seven dollars for Haircuts, $15 for manicures and pedicures, waxes as low as $10, facials for $30, and even hair styling starting at $11.

“This is a unique department,” Partee said. “Not only the students, but the community can get the chance to utilize these deals.”

“I love it here, I come every Friday,” said Charlotte Woods, a local and regular client. “I’ve been coming since it began about 10 years ago and the teachers are great. The students make me feel so comfortable that I feel this is a second home to me.”

The cosmetology department also offers monthly specials, including two for one deal, available to students on pipeline.

“The department tries to put together a new special every month for each category to keep the specials equal, which turns out to be a good deal,” said the co-chair of the cosmetology department Sherry Fair-Paz. “The students work really hard and do a good job with their clients.”

Students start by sculpting their coiffure skills on doll heads during the first part of training, called “Module One.” They finish the module by giving haircuts to willing friends and family to show what they’ve learned.

Cosmetology students need 1600 hours of working on the floor to meet the California state board requirement; clients should remember that they are not professionals yet.

“The department has good prices and great teachers that are really involved,” said Marisol Rivera, another regular client. “You don’t have to worry about a haircut coming out bad.”

“We offer really good deals because we are on a school’s budget and we aren’t capable of charging people high prices considering we are not professionals and haven’t passed the state board yet,” said one of the Cosmetology students Caiti Sonni. “For the most part people are happy with the outcome of their hair cuts.”

The outlet is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
