Review: New cheerleading show ‘Hellcats’ promises both dancing and drama

Hellcats,” the new cheerleading show on the CW, “brings it on” Wednesday nights with more creative, yet tasteful dance moves than seen in previous cheerleading themed shows.

Alyson Michalka stars as the protagonist Marti Perkins. She’s the smart, pretty girl who holds a “bad girl,” image with all her black clothing.

While studying pre-law at Memphis Lance University, Marti inexplicably loses her scholarship and has a week to pay. Desperate to stay in school, she discovers that by joining the school’s cheer squad she can regain her scholarship.

With Marti’s gymnast background, she soon finds herself being Hellcats’ new and most unique cheerleader. With her one-of-a-kind dance moves and perfect figure, Marti becomes the girl others envy. Ashley Tisdale plays the antagonist as the mean, insecure cheer captain, Savannah Monroe.

“Hellcats” provides entertainment mostly to teens with its dramatic, yet cliché scenes of prissy cheerleader catfights and exceptionally poor acting from Michalka. While the plotline is all too predictable, it brings a fun and enjoyable no-brainer show to some viewers. Overall, it’s unlikely that this show will catch the attention of a large audience.
