Men’s tennis pair falls in Southern Cal Regional semifinals

The Vaqueros tennis pair Nikolay Ivanov and Regis Fastrez’s thrilling run ended Saturday in the semifinals of the So Cal Regional at L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills.

Ivanov-Fastrez won a crucial tiebreaker against Eric Lu-Gordon Paitimusa of Mt. San Antonio 6-0, 7-6 (6) Thursday to advance to the round of 16.

On Friday, the pair squared off against Western State Conference rivals Paul Negapetyan-Dinusha Wijesuriya of Ventura.

Ivanov and Fastrez outworked the pair from Ventura beating them 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. A few hours later the pair pulled off a sensational win against Bakersfield’s James Griffin and Matt Booth, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

But on Saturday the run came to an end against the seventh seeded brothers from Ventura Juan Arteaga-Pedro Arteaga. The match ended 6-4, 6-3.

The pair did qualify for the State Tournament in Newport Beach on May 7-8. Eight pairs from each the North and South qualified for the tournament.
