Column – Sun will not set on this British soccer empire

The people of England have suffered enough, ranging from goals disallowed, to red-cards, and to penalty misses in vital moments. But this time around, it seems like the England national soccer team can finally rest their disarrays and be crowned World Cup Champions.

The highly anticipated sporting event is just around the corner. Many are already speculating about possible outcomes at work, schools, churches, or with friends and family.

The beauty is that everyone has their opinion about who they believe will win, whether it’s Brazil with five World Cup titles, current World Cup holder Italy, European Champion Spain, or the host South Africa.

For England, it’s down to key elements such as the hiring of experienced manager Fabio Capello, major players functioning well with new players, and staying off the media hype and the expectations that come with it.

The national team has not recently had a head coach proven to be a winner in installing stability. Many will argue what about former coach Sven Goran Eriksson? To be honest, “Svennis” only won with teams that invested heavily in new recruitment of players, and his private life wasn’t very low-key, to say the least. He brought in way too many love affairs and scandals that affected the national team negatively.

Capello, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. He hasn’t been in the headlines for various scandals. Instead, he installed stability and specific rules that the team must follow. Most importantly, he is a proven winner with both major teams and “lesser” teams. He’s an excellent coach in bringing the best out of his players and demanding perfection and this has been well received from all current players.

Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Captain John Terry, and Rio Ferdinand have all been labeled as the boys of the golden generation, and this is probably their last chance. To win a major tournament as they are aging. Adding the likes of Wayne Rooney, Aaron Lennon, Gareth Barry, Theo Walcott, and Ashley Young, gives England an interesting mix of experience and fresh blood that can take them all the way to the winner’s podium.

Then, of course, you have the media and the hype that comes out of it. The media is without a doubt England’s worst enemy on and off the field. English is the only country whose newspapers build up their national team so much that even the mighty God couldn’t match them. The media should take a different approach, and encourage the players to do well and not put them under any unnecessary pressure. If that’s accomplished, then England has a better chance at becoming world champions.

One of the first things Capello did was to hire a sports psychiatrist to establish a self-belief that was obviously missing. The mindset of the players has never been so fearless and resolute.

If England can move on from their past, then they will be able to crown themselves as World Cup winners.
