Column – Never are we satisfied

Okay California, I thought we had a deal.

I move half way across the world and you’re supposed to give me some good weather. I did my part. So, where is the sun?

The last few weeks have been full of rainy, windy and cloudy days and it’s horrible. You freeze when you get up in the morning, everything is wet and you cannot go out and do the things you want. It seems to be very far from the postcards you can buy in the gift shops on State Street. This is not the Santa Barbara I signed up for.

According to the Web site Weatherunderground.com, it has been a couple of degrees colder than usual. So maybe we have the right to complain.

I hate myself for writing this for I’m doing something that every Swede always does, no matter what: complain about the weather. If it snows it’s too cold, if it’s sunny it’s not warm enough, or if it’s sunny for too long, it’s too hot. Swedes are never satisfied with the weather.

Or, I thought this was only Swedes. But surprisingly, I heard people here in Santa Barbara say, “It’s nothing else but sun here, I want it to be some different kind of weather.” This thing is a global issue.

Actually, complaining about the weather is such a common phenomena that you can take classes in it. With National Geographic you can go deep to find out how the weather used to be in your region and if you have reason to be grumpy on certain days.

That seems very interesting. Classes where you study whiners? Maybe it’s something City College should think about.

If you just add classes in “the gas price is too high,” “politicians are nothing but liars,” and “the book is better than the movie,” then we would have a major that many people can appreciate.

Last semester was the first time I ever visited California. During the entire fall it only rained around five times. It was heaven on earth. Then I heard people saying they didn’t like how the weather never changed. “Are they crazy?” I thought and couldn’t imagine myself complaining about the weather being too sunny.

But Santa Barbara’s monotonous weather affected my schoolwork. For a photo assignment my classmates and I were supposed to take pictures of different weather conditions. But there was one little problem- the weather was always the same. It was sun in the morning, sun in the day, and then in the afternoon: some more sun. Finally I couldn’t wait anymore. So I took photos of the sunset and I managed to find a little fog.

So it seems like sun isn’t even satisfying, and neither is lack of enough sunny days.

Will we ever get happy? Mark Twain once said, “we all grumble about the weather, but nothing is done about it.”

This is very interesting. Why do we put so much energy on something that we are unable to affect, when we put less effort into things that we can affect?

In the last Santa Barbara election only 49 percent of the residents voted. How about if more people cared about things in their lives they can actually affect, instead of complaining about natural phenomena?

Okay, you can do both. I both vote and complain about the weather. And I think people will continue to do so because it’s fun. And as long as there is different weather, at least we’ll have something else to talk about at the breakfast tables and coffee machines.

So Santa Barbara residents better accept the weather as it is. So what do you say California? A little more sun, and then I will stop complaining. I promise. Well, most likely.
