Column – Smoking out state policies

Has California gone mad? Can’t its residents understand the consequences of legalizing marijuana?

It’s almost too late to do anything to stop it. Californians are most likely going to have a chance to vote this November on whether to make marijuana legal for anyone over 21, to grow, smoke, and even sell it. America is not ready for this.

Just think about what legalizing marijuana in California means to the rest of the country. Sure, it’s stupendously, financially good for the Golden State, but the ripple effect will be catastrophic. Let’s face it: smoking marijuana is as American as apple pie. We wouldn’t eat it in front of hungry friends.

First, think of the locked up potheads who are in states like Arizona, Texas, and Nevada, where marijuana is a felony that carries a prison sentence. They will be restless in their cages living within such close proximity to the free birds of the coast.

Imagine someone sitting in a jail cell for possessing a joint in North Carolina, learning that on the other side of the country fellow citizens don’t consider using pot something worth being punished for. It doesn’t seem fair. It’s those kinds of circumstances that can lead to a revolution.

How long can the rest of the US watch California shamelessly having fun before hitting a breaking point? Doesn’t California respect the tight grip of control that the law has over its citizens?

California grows a lot of pot, more than can be smoked within the state, so much of it is shipped out to the Midwest and the East Coast where people pay out big for high potency grass.

If it became legal for anyone in California to grow, a lot more people would, and a lot more would get sent out of state, meaning more chances for police to lock people up. Over time prisons would get so crowded that more would have to be built. This will be expensive for taxpayers. I doubt California will help pay to lock up their customers.

Eventually there might be more prisons than Starbucks in the US, and so many people locked up that there is bound to come petitions, and then ballots, legalizing pot everywhere. What then? With millions of convicted criminals back out on the streets (which means more crime) and ex felons without jobs, the unemployment rates will shoot through the roof. Not to mention the economy will fall apart because everyone is stoned and unmotivated. Bleak.

People say marijuana brings in $18 billion a year and should be taxed.

They say that people should be able to make their own decisions and that pot isn’t harmful, but it is. Think about it. Who would play Grand Theft Auto and eat Doritos, two very harmful things to consume, if not high?

At the expence of decency and reason, California will make money by legalizing marijuana.

Californians should stop being selfish, standing up for themselves, and voting for freedoms that they believe in, for the greater good of American society. It’s not all about you, California.
