Brief – Student Senate approves minor parking fee hike

The Student Senate approved a new plan to increase student parking fees for the first time in nearly 10 years, on Friday.

The fee hike will take affect Fall 2009, and will cost $33.50 if purchased online or $35.00 is bought in person.

Lindsay Benton, a sociology major, has learned to accept the possibility of higher parking fees.

“I think it’s inevitable with all the budget cuts,” Benton said. “It sucks, but it’s bound to increase.”

The Board of Trustees-who had previously held back their vote in order to hear the Student Senate’s opinion-will vote on the proposal on March 26.

“It was nice of them to hold off,” Student Senate Trustee Sean Knotts said.

There are currently 2,466 parking stalls on campus, of which 1,890 are available to students until 5 p.m. each day. No plan has been proposed to increase the amount of stalls.

“I wish there were more stalls on East Campus carpool,” Benton said.
