Review of I Fight Dragon’s ‘Welcome to the Breakdown’

“I Fight Dragons is precisely the sonic ‘power up’ that pop culture needs” is a self-description of the band, written on their homepage and it is entirely accurate.

The music is basically a mix of pop/rock with original electronic sounds from Nintendo Game Boys and Nintendo Entertainment Systems (NES). As soon as I listened to their music, I knew I was going to enjoy it. It made me happy partially because of its comical melody.

The rock band, originally from Chicago, was formed in 2008 and consists of 6 members. Since their formation, they have released two albums.

Their second album, “Welcome to the Breakdown,” was released in 2010. I really fell in love with the track “Not I.” The melody makes me feel like a kid, yet the lyrics remind me about being a grown-up.

If it weren’t for the unique tones, they would be like any rock or pop band. Their music is uplifting, but the lyrics still have meaning. “The Power of Love” could potentially be a typical lame love song, but it differentiates itself by turning into a videogame in my head.

I really enjoyed listening to their music. I love the old Super Mario games you play on the 8-bit Nintendo. Their music made me think about how my best friend and I used to sit in her room as kids and play all those old games like Super Mario and Ice Climber.
