Music festival in Isla Vista for all ages

Kajapaluuza, a free, all-ages music festival will feature local hip-hop artists, restaurants, and art vendors getting a chance to self-promote.

Local musicians will gather at Anisq ‘Oyo’ Park in Isla Vista to celebrate artist Josh Mendoza’s CD release under his stage name Kajmaj.

Mendoza said that he hopes this festival will be an annual “platform to celebrate local artist’s achievements.”

The event, put on by City College student Marisa Heighes, will promote 13 local artists. The musicians performing are categorized under the reggae, hip-hop and electric genre of music.

Heighes said they “wanted to make it a family-friendly environment with no beer garden.”

She said it was planned to have a festival atmosphere, with different food vendors and young people promoting their art and clothing lines.

Mendoza wanted to turn his CD release party into a festival for multiple artists, because he says local hip-hop artists don’t have a venue to promote themselves.

“I’ve been doing music in this town for the past 15 years,” Mendoza said. “The only artists in this town that get exposure are rock artists.”

Mendoza and Heighes wanted to focus the event on “805 locals.” Heighes’ event attracted sponsors, such as local stores Hempwise and Sweet Jane.

Harmony, an artist performing at Kajapaluuza, is a graphic design student at City College. She will also be promoting and selling her artwork at the event.

Heighes said the artists featured have a “conscious music” style with upbeat positive messages.

Heighes and Mendoza are looking forward to Saturday and seeing the locals who have “that entrepreneur spirit,” Heighes said.

Kajapaluuza is from 2 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Anisq ‘Oyo’ Park in Isla Vista.
