Women’s Golf-Group strong in opening rounds

The women’s golf team came in second place at the Desert Classic Invitational in Palm Springs over the weekend, with a score of 646.

Of the 15 teams competing, the Vaqueros were beat out only by Sierra College. The team of six freshmen was unable to replicate last year’s first place finish in a tournament that Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez considers to be the top women’s golf invitational of the year

“We’re brand new,” Melendez said. “The bottom line is, we’re a talented team again.”

Asaka Sim led the team on the first day of the tournament with a score of 74 on the par 72 course. Her sister, Sumika Kim, led the second day with a score of 75. Melendez is confident the team will contend for the Southern California championship this year. He added that the second place finish is a good indication of his team’s ability to contend for the state championship.
