We are in the age of the indie female folk singer. With the success of Feist, Kimya Dawson and Cat Power, women with earthy vocal chords are growing in popularity and numbers.
Add one more to the bunch: Basia Bulat and her debut album “Oh, My Darling.” Bulat seems to be any mainstream female folk singer with pretty vocals combined with quaint melodies.
The dressed-down acoustic guitar matched with her quivering voice presents a sweet but mystic sound that can enchant even the busiest people. To add to her complexity, the artist delicately incorporates piano, harmonica and bongos into the music.
At times the instruments dominate her, fading the mystery in her voice that makes the simplistic album so compelling. What’s puzzling about Bulat is how the songstress has sneaked into the scene without much notice.
