Kanye West, KRS-One, and Justin Timberlake. Just a few of the artists lacing the funky combination of deep beats, smooth strings and hard-hitting lyrics in Talib
Kweli‘s latest album “Eardrum,” released last month.
Always fresh, Kweli continues to inspire with crafty vocals and inventive music combinations. The album opens with a woman, a drum and the seductive lyrics, “Listen, listen, a man, always punctual with his mouth, listen to his revolution of syllables, scooping lightning from his pores.” This is the perfect introduction to Kweli’s fusion of God, love, and recognition. The velvety lines of “In the Mood” breathe into the ears and give a break from the heavier lyrics of the album.
What is lacking, however, is the spark we’ve seen in earlier albums. Some of the songs, although technical, seem to mimic each other. Although he’s been working with several other acclaimed producers, Kweli doesn’t seem like he’ll be out of the picture any time soon.
4 out of 5 stars.
