Vaqueros flying high in league action

The men’s volleyball team continued their strong start in sweeping Palomar Wednesday, 25-20, 27-25, 25-21.

“We had mental stamina,” said head coach Melody Parker. ” I believe that is what made the difference.”

City College (5-1) overpowered a much shorter Palomar team with Armen Zakarian tallying 12 kills. Geoff Benz added seven kills and four blocks and Chris Deem contributed five blocks.

“We have come out strong in the season,” Parker said. “We let other teams know we have a lot of hitters.”

The first match was a breeze for the Vaqueros, but the second was a seesaw affair that at one point saw Palomar pull ahead 24-22. Santa Barbara battled back with two hits to tie at 24-24.

The teams went back and forth but City College ended up on top after Palomar was unable to return Colin Robertson’s forceful serves.

The Vaqueros were in control the whole way in match three.

Parker praises the team’s passing. She is grateful to be able to run a fast-paced offense.

“SBCC is strong, in great condition, and very competitive,” the tenth-year coach said.

“We have been able to come back and take games from behind,” she added. “This team knows how to be their best when their best is needed.”

The team has been to the State Final Four four times during Parker’s tenure.
