The Vaqueros went down 28-12 on Saturday to College of the Canyons, the number one ranked community college football team in California.
“You can’t really blame the loss on anything,” said wide receiver Ernie Pierce. “We played a really good team.”
The visiting Cougars are 6-0 in conference and 9-0 overall cruising on a 23-game winning streak. The Vaqueros are 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play after losing their last three games.
“[The Cougars] beat teams by three or four touchdowns,” Pierce said. “We were right there with them.”
College of the Canyons averages 42.2 points per a game, but was held to 28 against the tough Vaquero defense.
“[The] defense played like champs,” Pierce said. “They’re the number one scoring team.”
Canyons beat Allan Hancock College 42-24 Saturday Oct. 29, while City College fell to L.A. Valley 13-10.
“We’re not going to roll over for anybody,” said head coach Reggie Bolton. “I hope this game showed everybody we’re not.”
Quarterback Justin Lucas connected with tight end Lucien Blout for the Vaqueros first touchdown with 1:20 left in the first half. The extra point was missed, bringing the score 16-6 after the Cougars scored two quick touchdowns in the first quarter.
“We missed a lot of opportunities,” Pierce said. ” We stuck it to them. Once we got rolling, we got rolling.”
Defensive back Corey Sanchez recovered a blocked field goal and ran it back 85 yards for the Vaqueros final touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was broken up making the final score 28-12.
The Vaqueros will face the Ventura Pirates, who lost to Bakersfield 52-24 on Saturday.
“We’re going to win,” Pierce said. “It doesn’t matter by how much, we’re just going to win.”
The Vaqueros travel to Ventura for their last conference game at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Ventura College.
