The women’s volleyball team recovered from a devastating loss last week to punish Glendale College, sweeping them 30-10, 30-12, 30-8 in a Western State Conference game on Friday.
“I think we played really well,” said freshman middle blocker Rachelle Cushman. “We were really consistent in playing. It was just a really fun game.”
Game one was dominated by big blocks from sophomore middle blocker Brianna Stewart, and on-point sets by the 5’4″ freshman setter Vanessa Duarte. The taller, quicker and more vocal City College team overpowered Glendale making their head coach frustrated with her players.
“Let’s go!” said Glendale’s head coach Yvette Ybarra-Cephus right before the second game started. “Come on! Play with some intensity.”
Glendale became motivated, scoring the next three points and leaving City College behind 3-0.
The talented Vaqueros had communication breakdowns. Balls fell to the floor while two teammates looked at each other with doubt.
City College soon got their momentum back with huge kills by Cushman and aces from Duarte’s jump serves.
Sara Wilton had huge hits, with one almost taking off the head of a Glendale player sending the crowd of parents and football players into a frenzy.
The well-conditioned team stayed ahead in the game with consistent serves and defensive blocks from Stewart.
“We had a lot more energy [than last game],” Cushman said. “We were fired up.”
Stewart continued to serve consistently as the Vaqueros cruised through the third and final game. They capped off the conference win with a kill by Lyanaya Darcy and a new record of 1-2.
“We’re working harder,” said Head Coach Ed Gover. “And everyday we’re getting better.”
The Vaqs look at this win as a stepping-stone towards a wining season.
“We haven’t been winning many games,” Cushman said. “This is a good start.”
The Vaqueros will take on Cuesta College at 7 p.m. on Friday in the Sports Pavilion.
