Violence, sex, and an all-star cast are exactly how to describe director Robert Rodriguez’s newest effort “Sin City”.
Rodriguez teamed up with comic creator Frank Miller and special guest director Quentin Tarantino to create a visually stunning film.
The cinematography combines black and white film with touches of the primary colors to add a special effect. We see red when the good guys bleed and white when the bad guys die. Blue eyes and yellow hair help portray the character’s personalities.
Bruce Willis stars along side some of Hollywood’s heavyweight including Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Elijah Wood, Benicio Del Toro, Brittany Murphy, and Rosario Dawson to name a few.
This star-studded cast is packed into a movie about revenge and the battle between good and bad. Three men try their luck at taking down the powerhouse family in Basin City, the Rourks.
Willis plays police officer Hartigan who uncovers Rourk Jr. as a child rapist and saves a young girl from falling victim to Jr.’s sick mind. He is then reunited with Nancy, the young girl, after eight long years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
Alba plays the grown-up Nancy and professes her love to the man that saved her life when she was a little girl. She grew up to be a stripper at a local bar.
It’s pretty weird seeing aging Willis kiss the beautiful Alba, but if it’s in the story, we can live with it.
Willis’ character always seems to have something up his sleeve but is not as specialized as his “Die Hard” character because of a fatal heart condition that often slows him down. The most amusing character is Marv, played by Mickey Rourke. He’s like the Incredible Hulk. He takes out several cops with just a swing of his arm and he’s larger than life.
“You should have shot me in the head,” Marv said after being shot 12 times. This guy never dies. Marv is out for revenge after Elijah Wood’s character, Kevin, kills a lady friend of his. Marv goes on a path of destruction to find and kill Kevin.
Kevin is a quick little guy with sharp nails and a disgusting secret he shares with Cardinal Rourk, played by Rutger Hauer. Wood doesn’t talk throughout the whole movie, which may be a relief after seeing him recite long monologues in the three “Lord of the Rings” films.
Golden Globe winner, Clive Owen, plays Dwight, the man who always finds a way out of a sticky situation. Dwight helps the prostitutes of Old Town protect themselves from the mob and pimps after mistaking a cop for a customer, Del Toro.
Any fans of Benicio Del Toro will love his portrayal of the bad cop, Jackie Boy. He reminds us of Dr. Gonzo, his character in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. It’s fantastic. Best part of the movie. Dwight teams up with the sword fighting Miho, Devon Aoki, to help the ladies defeat the mob. She doesn’t talk throughout the movie either but she kills everyone and anyone who gets in her way.
The only confusing part of the movie was why Josh Hartnett was even in it. His part made no sense to the plot but girls may enjoy looking at him.
So, when you get a chance you need to go check out this movie. It’s action packed and full of humor. This movie is rather graphic and shows nudity throughout the film. I highly recommend it if you are ready for the strong R rating.
