Delivering the faculty lecture is considered the top honor bestowed on a faculty member each year.
Next year, the 26th year of the lecture, will feature Professor Jim Chesher.
“I don’t like to be the center of attention,” said Chesher. “It’s not a natural setting [using a stage for lectures] for me.”
This year’s lecturer was Professor Peter Georgakis who discussed the golden ratio.
Chesher received his bacherlor’s degree in English literature from San Jose State University and minored in philosophy. He earned his master’s degree in philosophy at UCSB. He also has a secondary teaching credential and taught English for three years in a San Jose high school.
Seven members of the faculty selection committee have the final decision on who will become the faculty lecturer.
Haslund, who delivered his lecture in 2001, said to choose lecturer the committee has to count the number of nominations a candidate has.
The final decision is unanimous. Haslund added that they spent a long time deciding who would take on next year’s event.
“He’s a serious academic,” Haslund said. “He questions everything in an academic way.”
But Chesher said that he would not have wanted to become Faculty Lecturer.
“There are quite a few people ahead in line,” said Chesher. “I didn’t go in front, I was pushed in.”
Chesher said it will give him the opportunity to honor teaching. He will be representing students and staff and it will be “a tribute to [his] colleagues.”
He began teaghin part-time at City College in 1975.
“I don’t want to let anybody down,” he said.
