Men’s volleyball team takes third place in state

City College reached the State Final Four but fell short of victory Friday night at Moorpark.

The Vaqueros lost to Palomar in a game that lasted barely one hour. The Vaqs were defeated, 25-18, 25-22, 25-13, to a team they swept effortlessly earlier in the season.

“We had a good season, but Palomar deserved to win,” head coach Melody Parker said.

Colin Robertson led the team with eight kills with Christopher Deem close behind with seven. Palomar’s leading hitter had 15 kills.

The Vaqueros had a total of only nine digs as a team along with nine errors.

“Palomar played great defense,” Parker said. “Our strategy in the third game was to run a faster offense, but they were ready.”

The Vaqueros won their Final Four match with Grossmont on April 27, winning in four games.

City College lost the first game 25-20 but bounced back winning the next three, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19.

Armen Zakarian hammered in 16 kills and Geoff Berz added 11. Setter Patrick Heyne “ran a fast, quick, smart game,” Parker said. Heyne dished out 55 assists.

The team ended the season 13-5 and reached the Final Four for the fifth time in nine years.

Palomar went on to play Moorpark for the championship and lost 3-2.
