Ashlee Simpson’s second album, “I Am Me,” is predictably another angsty set of tracks aimed at adoring teenagers. The CD is reminiscent of Simpson’s predecessors: Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, and even a little bit of Britney Spears. Although her vocal talents are impressive, her voice gives a raspy feel throughout the album. Simpson doesn’t stylistically stray far from the type of music that teen and college age pop stars create. She throws in the necessary heart-felt ballads in the heartbroken “Say Goodbye,” which is perfectly fitting for a Disney movie soundtrack. Simpson also throws in some banal hip-hop in the rather humorously titled track “I Didn’t Steal Your Boyfriend.” “I Am Me,” is an obnoxious attempt at angry punk rock that declares even in the midst of heartbreak, the singer will not change for anyone. All in all, Simpson’s sophomore CD is just that, sophomoric.
