Hailing from Los Angeles, Silversun Pickups is like being in a boxing ring: It’ll suck you in and take you out. This alternative-rock band’s recipe for music consists of a smooth beginning, followed by a touch of the occasional screamo, and a spoonful of classical instruments like the cello and violin. Silversun Pickups have made two albums so far: “Pikul,” released in 2005, and “Carnavas” released in mid-February. “Carnavas” has more of a rich guitar sound that is reminiscent of the movie “Garden State,” but with less screamo. Bass player Nikki Monninger compliments lead singer Brian Aubert’s voice perfectly with a White Stripes type of technique that works wonders for this album, but wasn’t used in the band’s first album. Over all, Silversun Pickups’ album “Carnavas” is good for one of those days where creativity flows from you like beer from a keg.
