You wouldn’t want to be the infamous ex-girlfriend listening to Damien Rice’s sophmore album, “9,” released last week from Heffa records. Rice’s haunting fluidity paired with his hard hitting lyrical content would make any previous lover cringe at its delivery. The opening and title track, “9 crimes,” welcomes back Lisa Hannigan, who also sang with RIce on his debut album. The pair evoke familiar emotions of loss, and sharp conflict, setting a general tone for the following nine tracks. A mid-cd treat is found in the clever “Coconut Skins”, an upbeat melody with a serious undertone. In this track, Rice reminds, “time is contagious, everybody’s getting old.” Time for Rice however, seems to be no enemy, as it has brought yet another solid album. Divorcee’s and the broken hearted alike should stock up on the puff’s before indulging.
