Students looking to create films, critique movies, and learn about production from peers now have a creative group to join.
Associated Student Senate approved the Student Film Guild club on campus last Friday.
Film production is more work than just picking up a camera according to vice president of this new club, Megan Alldis.
This club emphasizes providing a network of filmmakers so that students may find others like them to help expand their creativity.
With free film screenings every Tuesday, who wouldn’t want to know more about film production?
This club has big plans for students curious about film watching and film production alike including possible field trips to L.A., guest speakers form people already in the film industry, and professors speaking to the students about production.
Club members will also be encouraged to enter demo reels in the 10-10-10 Santa Barbara International Film Festival held for both high school and college students. This competition will be held in December on Chapala St. in downtown Santa Barbara.
“You can’t just pick up a camera and use it. You have to think about the script, the lighting, the sound, who the producer is,” said Alldis, “For a three minute movie you have to consider all the work, and plan it out frame by frame in your head.”
Another goal set for the end of the semester by the Student Film Guild is a student film festival run by students on campus.
According to Alldis, working together as a team is key in this field of study, which is why she is hoping the club will produce a documentary film on civic issues involving students in the Santa Barbara area by the end of the year.
“It’s really going to be an active club, we won’t do a whole lot of sitting around and listening,” said Christopher Deerz, club president and film production major.
Deerz plans for the club to be aimed towards students willing to commit time and effort to creating films and having fun.
Student Film Guild will meet Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. in the Club Room in the Student Services building. The club will also be screening movies in the Fe Bland Forum on West Campus Tuesdays from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Student films will be shown as a preview before the film. Everyone is welcome and there is no fee to join this club.
