The Foundation for Santa Barbara City College and several community donors have pitched in to help the college secure a full-time position for Atkinson Gallery Director Dane Goodman for at least the next three years.
The gallery, located on the second floor of the Humanities Building on East Campus, is the City College’s showcase for the visual arts.
“The quality of the shows and organization have been excellent,” said Superintendent-President John Romo. “Dane Goodman has brought great leadership and now we have a much better oversight of the gallery.”
Romo added that the college will take existing funding, along with additional money from several private donors, to establish a three-year commitment to keep Goodman employed as gallery director. During that time, the college plans to explore and devise a way to fund Goodman by itself.
Although everything not is completely worked out yet, Romo said the details are being finalized, and both sides have expressed a “verbal commitment” to keep Goodman on staff.
“Dane Goodman has made valuable contributions to the Atkinson Gallery, the art department and the college,” Art Professor Ed Inks said.
Goodman brought the first-ever Barry Berkus show to City College. Berkus, a well-known local architect, has been named one of the top residential architects of the twentieth century by Residential Architecture Magazine.
