David Gilmour, former Pink Floyd guitarist, falls short of spectacular on his third solo album, “On An Island.” The first track, “Castellorizon,” is a mix of several different sound effects and an awesome guitar solo. The sweet sound of his wailing guitar could bring a feeling of nostalgia to any Pink Floyd lover, while also make them realize how much Gilmour is living in the shadow of his deceased band. The title track, “On An Island,” as well as “Then I close My Eyes” and “Smile” also have the distinct Floyd sounds to them. Tracks such as “The Blue” and “A Pocket Full of Stones,” show signs of Gilmour attempting to move in his own direction and find a new sound. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to find that direction or sound. The obvious shadow of what was once Pink Floyd still looms over the poor Gilmour. I wouldn’t recommend the album to any avid Floyd fans, but a new listener might find it attractive.
