CD Review – Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins-Rabbit Fur Coat

Jenny Lewis’s solo debut, “Rabbit Fur Coat,” opens with a lovely three-part spiritual harmony leading into an album tinged with the sounds of gospel and country. Best known as the singer for the indie rock band Rilo Kiley, Lewis is backed by the vocally talented Watson Twins, whose contributions on the album evoke a Motown sound. Her strong, poetic lyrics create hopeful and haunting images along with ironic social commentary, as seen on “Rise Up With Fists”. Though most of the songs are a bit of a departure from her group efforts with Rilo Kiley, a few sound as if they could have been pulled from the band’s archive portfolio. Buy this album if only for the song “Handle With Care”, which includes vocal contributions from Bright Eyes’ frontman Conor Oberst and Death Cab For Cutie singer Benjamin Gibbard.
