The Juan MacLean can be categorized as ‘dance-punk’, but is far greater dance than punk. John Maclean, the man behind the moog, begins the new album, “Less Than Human,” with a simple electronic pulse and proceeds with layers of glitch and synthesizers to achieve a full sound. In “My Shiny Skinned Friend” the non-human atmosphere is improved by adding the drone of what sounds like a lizard, a robot, and a robotic lizard. The track “Give Me Every Little Thing,” is a well-conceived combination of techno and jazz. The standout track of the album, “Crush the Liberation”, features a Thriller-like bass-line, looping drums, cowbell, and a noteworthy title. Although it’s not ahead of its time, or particularly amazing, “Less Than Human” is a solid entry in its genre.
