The Academic Senate listened to a proposal for increasing the number of international students admitted to City College at its meeting Feb. 1.
Pablo Buckelew, dean of Educational Programs, addressed the senate, proposing that the limit be changed from 525 students to five percent of the previous fall’s enrollment. This shift could cause an increase of about 300 international students.
Peter Haslund, professor of political science, moved for senate support of the increase in international student enrollment.
“Students have said the mix of international students on this campus is one of the things that differentiates us from high school,” said Buckelew.
The primary concern is funding the additional language skills support required by the increase in foreign language students.
“We will not increase the number unless we get the resources,” said Buckelew.
