K.D. Lang’s Summerfling on her “Invincible Summer” album takes us right into summer in a few lines. “Ah, ah, ah, bah, bah, bah, bah” with a Beach Boys surf genre mixed with a slight reminder of Dion Warwick’s “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” Simple, romantic and 1960s-it is hard not to visualize Annette Funicello swinging her hips with Frankie Avalon. As with Lang, she recreates and stretches herself with this album. What would summer be without a summer fling? Everytime I hear this single, I go back to that perfect night that I saw her perform at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. That year, Lang was summer. She brought playfullness, heat, sunburns, wind blown hair, and the smell of Coppertone suntan lotion to the show through her music and visual imagery. You will find “Summerfling” irresistlble.
