Student senate to revamp club room

The Associated Student Senate unanimously approved a plan to revamp the club room in the Campus Center by adding computers, desks, and conference tables.
“There is absolutely no reason why this shouldn’t happen,” said Petra Malinova, vice-president of External Affairs of the student senate. “We have had the money to do this; we needed to know clubs wanted it.”
The senate will allocate money from a 10-year-old savings account. The job is estimated to cost $22,750. The senate savings account currently holds just over $55,000.
The club room, which is located in Room 225 in the Campus Center, currently has 3 tables, several chairs and a whiteboard. A number of campus clubs expressed interest in a project like this.
“This is something the clubs really want,” added Malinova. “There is no reason to be selfish and spend the money on something for (the senate).”
The remodeling project is expected to happen soon. It will include 19 chairs, nine tables, three computers with printers and two filing cabinets. The room will also be fitted with new carpeting and will be freshly painted.
The computers will all be password protected and will most likely be kept behind nice-looking desks.
“All those who participated in a very successful club day on the West Campus, know the clubs are very important in maintaining a social life at school,” said James Carter, associated student body president.
City College currently has 14 clubs ranging from the multilingual club to the student career forum. Ann Fryslie, director of student and alumni activities, explained some of the difficulties that some of the clubs have experienced in the past.
“A club was forced to paint its posters and make flyers under the Campus Center in the stairwell,” Fryslie said. “With computers and printers, they will have the room and technology to get things done.”
All the furniture in the room will be fitted with wheels so the room can be rearranged. In the senate’s first discussion on the issue, Carter told the senate that the clubs deserve a professional yet flexible environment in which to work.
The senate will oversee the maintenance of the computers and will be responsible for replacing them.
Senates in the past have made donations and contributions to the school.
This year’s senate said it made it a point to make this its offering to clubs for years to come.
