Editor, The Channels:
Many of you have probably read or heard reports about the charges of rape and burglary that have been filed against a UCSB student who was working part-time on campus as a security officer. The alleged incidents that led to these charges occurred over the past year.
I want to express my deep compassion for everyone touched by these incidents. I have great faith in the criminal justice system, and the college is cooperating with all agencies during the investigation of these matters.
Not only as a college president, but as a husband, father, and long time member of this community, I am writing to all SBCC students today because I want to assure you that Santa Barbara City College is absolutely committed to providing a safe campus.
Our Campus Security Department, headed by John Dafoe, a 32-year law enforcement veteran, is a solid, dedicated department that works closely with the Santa Barbara Police Department to assure campus safety. As a result of this, SBCC provides a safe and positive learning environment; with consistently low numbers on the crime statistics we publish each year.
Based on conversations with students and staff, I understand that many of you are concerned. I felt that it was important that you receive information from me and a reiteration of our commitment to the safety and well being of our campus community. Let us know if you see something suspicious or something that makes you feel uncomfortable. It is important to me that you know about the strong systems we have in place to ensure the safety of our campus and the entire college community. Let’s work together to keep this campus safe and the learning environment it was designed to be.

City College superintendent-president
