Health buffs who work out at the Life Fitness Center will be moved to a temporary gym under the foot bridge next semester while the old center is being remodeled.
Fitness director Ellen O’Connor said the college wants to keep the center open during construction because it attracts some 2,000 students and community members each semester.
“Construction on the Sports Pavilion will last 18 to 24 months,” O’Connor said. “We’re hoping for January ’07.”
City College students have remained optimistic about the temporary shift in location.
“As a student athlete, I depend on the facility to fulfill my coach’s daily workout requirements,” said Sarah Ingram, a member of the City College soccer and track teams. “As long as this temporary facility doesn’t hinder my routine, I’ll be happy.”
When completed, the newly designed Sports Pavilion will offer an elevator – to comply with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act -four state-of-the-art classrooms and a an update to the building’s 30-year-old heating and cooling system.
The temporary building will not contain lockers, but those will still be available in the Sports Pavilion.
Though construction has already decreased available parking, college officials note that people can take advantage of parking at the harbor.
Emily McPhetridge, a student athlete, says she has also kept a positive outlook on the disruption.
“Things like this are required to build for the future,” said McPhetridge. “I’m glad that the LFC is being updated.”
