Welcome back, City College students and faculty, from your Associated Student Senate. We hope this first month has been as exciting for all of you as it has been for us.
This term’s senate is an active, powerful bunch of individuals that have been striving relentlessly to increase activism and awareness through communication and events.
Our group consists of President Omar Damacela, a motivated single parent on a mission to excel.
Our Vice President of Senate Affairs is SeKwon Kim, a Korean student who came to California to study film. Our Vice President of External Affairs is David Jones, who grew up traveling Europe and is leading a committee to revise our Constitution and By Laws. Win Chueng Yee Wan is an active student in charge of our Operations and Finance. Our Public Relations Officer is a music and art loving business student named Justin Walton. Our Board of Trustee Representative is a savvy political science major who is also a Peer Advisor for EOPS named Maria Garcia. Cristina Garcia is our new outgoing and friendly Student Advocate. and Tom Daga are our returning senators determined to make a difference, and Pablo Lopez, Matt Affolder, Chang Ho Han are our new active and motivated senators. Our group’s insightful faculty advisor is the insightful Ann Fryslie, director of Student Activities and our wonderful senate secretary is the friendly Amy Henry of the Student Activities office.
A Recruitment Committee has been formed to let the members of City College know what we are doing and how to be a part of making a difference on campus by joining the student senate. We are looking for as many motivated individuals as we can get our hands on. An Accountability Committee has been formed to make sure that all officers and senators fulfill their duties and expectations. A Design Committee has been formed to tackle all of the creative ideas the Senate and student body come up with. Other steps have been taken to tackle the issue of awareness such as the formation of the Political Awareness Committee by Pablo Lopez and future plans for a campus wide Student Senate Newsletter. The Senate has sponsored events so far such as the Blood Drive and will be sponsoring events such as the McKinley School Lunch Program, a program to educate youths about the importance of college and what City College has to offer. Our goals this semester consist of things such as maximizing the senate to its full potential of eighteen members; more events, art, and music on campus; and an effective, active governing process.
If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, or would like to join the City College Student Senate, come to our meetings, which are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Center- Room 223, or your helpful Student Activities advisor (who happens to be our advisor) Ann Fryslie, who is located in the Student Activities office. Keep your ears and eyes open this semester for all the Student Senate has in store.
