There are few albums that turn into instant classics as soon as you put them into your CD player. The “American Gangster” soundtrack is one of them. Comprised entirely of Jay-Z tracks, this compilation of previously un-released songs brings the house down on any album dropped by any other M.C. this year. The beats are fresh, but familiar, and compliment Hova’s flows to perfection. The grown-up rapper doesn’t drop any club bangers, but he keeps his signature style by hitting listeners with lyrics only he could come up with.
The song “Hello Brooklyn” featuring Lil Wayne is one of the best hip-hop tracks I’ve heard all year. Track six, called “Roc Boys,” incorporates brass instruments and real drums for the best beat on the record. If you’re a hip-hop fan and you don’t have this album, something is seriously wrong with you.
