The City College women’s basketball team overwhelmed the Cuesta Cougars 70-49 Saturday at the Sports Pavilion, improving its record to 21-10, (7-2), tying them with Moorpark for second in the Western State Conference.
Twelve players scored for the Vaq’s who are in the midst of a 3-game winning streak, in which they have outscored its opponents 219-145.
“Now we are getting into the tough part of our schedule beginning with L.A Pierce,” said head coach Sandrine Krul.
The Vaqueros’ final three regular season games against L.A. Pierce, Ventura and Moorpark should give the women a pretty good indication of where they stand going into the postseason, given the quality of the three teams.
L.A. Pierce has a record of 18-9, Moorpark defeated the Vaqueros in double overtime two weeks ago and top rated Ventura is undefeated on the season with a 27-0 record.
Celebrating her 100th win at City College, coach Krul wanted her team to work on its weaknesses and strengthen its strengths against an outmatched Cuesta squad.
In a game that was never in doubt, City College pressured the Cuesta Cougars all over the court, contesting every pass and utilizing its seemingly endless bench.
According to Krul the Vaqueros superior depth allowed them to put the pressure on Cuesta throughout the entire game.
The Vaqueros were led in scoring by Lauren Wells and Jennifer Ju who had 8 points apiece. The two guards harassed Cuesta players all night forcing them to commit 33 turnovers.
“They were crossing over in front of us,” said Wells. “It was really easy to take the ball.”
Despite the fact that the women won, they struggled a bit in the second half converting only three field goals in the final 10 minutes of the game being outscored 19-7.
“We need to play consistently for 40 minutes and set each other up,” Wells said.
The Vaqs next game is today Feb. 11 at L.A Pierce. The Lady Vaqs will host Moorpark in their regular season finale on Feb. 18.
