Women’s Golf reign as state champions

City College Women’s Golf team capped a 44-1 season with a State Championship, their second since 2006.

The Vaqueros needed a combined 637 strokes in the two-day season finale played at Olivas Links in Ventura to capture the victory.

That mark was good enough to beat runner up Sacramento City College, as their group shot a 652, followed by day one leader Palomar (663), and Sierra College (664).

The girls were led by Individual State Champion Asaka Sim, who fired a tournament low 153 combined in the two day event.

Asaka’s older sister Sumika, who took a quarter off from UCSB to play for City College this semester, shot a 157 and finished just four strokes off the mark for the overall individual lead.

Sumika, Jackie Molstad (163) and Jenna Boyle (164), were named First Team all Western State Conference.

Sumika Sim said of City College’s big win at Olivas Links, “I was really proud that we all came together in the end.”

Sumika said that this is the perfect finish to a season of highlights for the City College women, who enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in school history.

In the end, Sumika gave a lot of credit for the great season to Coach Chuck Melendez for bringing this group of girls together as a team.

“Coach Melendez really knows how to coach girls – which is not an easy task. He really learned our personalities and figured out what motivated us individually,” Sumika said.

She added, “Golf is a difficult sport to coach because you are basically out there on your own, and a lot of times you forget that you are playing for each other.”

“But Chuck goes out on the course and reminds you why you’re out there without putting unnecessary pressure on you,” she said.

Although the entire season was a pleasure for her, Sumika was most proud of her younger sister Asaka, the freshman who won almost every possible award this season including the Western State Conference Player of the Year, and Individual State Champion.

“She was 100-percent dedicated and practiced hard and it showed,” Sumika said of her sister.

Sumika was also thankful for coach Melendez’ recruiting efforts during the summer.

“Coach has some really good prospects coming to City College both locally and from other areas,” Sumika said.
