The Japanese language program is sponsoring a traditional Japanese tea ceremony called “Peace and Harmony through cha-no-yu,” which means “hot water for tea.”
The tea ceremony will be held from 1:45 to 3 p.m. this Friday at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden located at 1212 Mission Canyon Rd.
The tea ceremony is an ancient tradition in Japan and requires special and long instruction.
“You have to attend a specialized school to learn to conduct this ceremony,” said Mai Yamamoto, a Japanese tutor at City College.
Among other strict requirements, the conductor has to dress in kimono, spend one to two days just preparing the tea leaves, and use special tea paraphernalia when brewing the tea.
To sign up, call the School of Modern Languages at 965-0581 ext. 3575. A $3 fee for the tea and sweets is required.
