Vaquero men’s soccer bounced back from a defeat at the hands of Fresno last week, with a 4-0 win over Rio Hondo Friday at La Playa Stadium.
The Vaqueros now hold a record of 5-2-0 so far this season.
City College started off strong creating the game’s first scoring chance in the 2nd minute, when Danny Molineaux tested the Rio Hondo keeper.
Striker Mark Knight made it 1-0 City College in the 4th minute after winning a tough challenge with the Rio Hondo keeper. Knight won the ball and reached the net from three yards out.
Knight was pleased with the way the team performed. “We fought hard for the victory,” Knight said. “And the clean sheet was just as important.”
City College kept applying the pressure, when striker Danny Molineaux blasted a shot just outside the penalty box to make it 2-0 off an assist by Mark Knight.
The Vaqs were in total control of the opening 15 minutes until Rio Hondo created some pressure against the Vaqs defense.
Open space in the Rio Hondo defense allowed a Vaquero counter attack, resulting in a Waid Ibrahim goal that advanced the score to 3-0 in the 26th minute on a cross from Stuart Kirk.
City College defender Jordan Leeming went out with an injury in the 30th minute after a collision at midfield.
On a corner kick by Craig Davies, Mark Knight headed in his second goal in the 43rd minute to seal the 4-0 victory.
The Vaqs offense cruised through the Rio Hondo defense by putting pressure on the keeper throughout the first half.
Head coach John Sisterson singled out the speed of the offense as the key to success in the game. “We outplayed them in the first half,” Sisterson said. “We destroyed them.”
City College moved the ball well in the opening of the second half, but lacked the finishing touch.
Rio Hondo had a hard time getting possession of the ball and an even harder time getting it over their own half of the field.
Waid Ibrahim had a golden opportunity in the 60th minute to increase City College’s lead, but his shot went inches wide off the post. ?
Rio Hondo created a dangerous scoring chance in the 64th minute, but midfielder Willie Gomez saw his shot bounce off the woodwork.
Rio Hondo tried to create opportunities on the offensive end, but nothing troubled Vaquero goalie Ricky Placencia.
City College was able to stay in control of the game with discipline play and finished off the Road Runners in the second half.
