The Associated Students Senate is looking for students interested in leadership roles as an officer or senator in the City College student government to run in the upcoming election.
Eight officer positions and 18 senator positions are available for students who wish to be a voting member of the student senate.
Ann Fryslie, director of Student Life and adviser to the senate, said this election is important because major officer positions like next year’s president and vice president are up for grabs.
With many of the current officers and senators transferring to new schools next fall, the senate wants to ensure new members are well prepared to take over projects the senate has worked on this year.
Tom Fitzgerald, president of the student senate, said the senate is looking for students with a willingness to be involved.
Attending a weekly Friday morning meeting where senate members discuss and vote on associated senate issues is a requirement of each officer and senator.
“Another very important requirement and responsibility is to make sure the student stays on top of their studies,” Fitzgerald said.
Students are also required to serve on a campus-wide committee and to actively participate in discussions and senate-sponsored events.
One more commitment for a student senate member includes acting as the collective voice for the entire City College student body.
Along with all the responsibilities and commitments, a student representative experience comes with some benefits and perks.
“Having the opportunity to introduce yourself as a member of the student senate is a perk within itself,” Fitzgerald said.
The eight students who are officers in the senate are also granted a faculty parking spot.
Any student who wants to apply must be able to attend mandatory candidate meetings, collect the appropriate amount of signatures, and campaign.
Any student who has at least a 2.0 cumulative G.P.A. can apply for a position. Students must be enrolled in at least five units and meet the standards of the Student Code of Conduct.
Applications can be picked up at the Office of Student Life located in the Campus Center, Room 217.
