The Associated Student Senate accepted a club application Friday from AB 540 club organizer Celeste Escamilla and faculty adviser Lydia Aguirre-Fuentes.
Escamilla described AB 540 legislation to the student senators, which exempts most California high school graduates from non-resident tuition regardless of their immigration status.
The proposed club will be open to all City College students and will work to promote college success for undocumented immigrants who qualify.
“Students feel because they’re undocumented they don’t have opportunities, but there are opportunities out there for them because there are people who care about these students,” Escamilla said.
The AB 540 club will recruit activists for outreach in the community and will seek help from community organizations such as Casa de la Raza and Cal-SOAP.
