The Vaquero football team garnered its first victory of the season with a 20-13 win over the East Los Angeles Huskies Saturday evening, bringing its record to 1-5.
“It’s great to achieve something we’ve been waiting for all year,” said head coach Reggie Bolton.
Ernie Pierce was vital to the Vaquero victory, earning a spot in the school record book with two punt returns for touchdowns, according to sports analyst Dave Lovton.
Pierce sparked the City College momentum with a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown. After a botched extra point, the half ended in a tie at 6-6.
City College opened the third quarter big with a 75-yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown dive by running back, Kevin McCleary.
The Huskies answered back with a long drive of their own, ending in a scoring toss to tie the game 13-13.
Early in the fourth, a “safe punt return” was called for Pierce. Instead, Pierce weaved in and out of the Huskie defense for 85 yards and the game-winning touchdown.
Linebacker Sam Shipley led defensive stops with numerous tackles, and a forced fumble.
McCleary finished the game with one touchdown and 135 yards rushing.
