Brief – Essay Rewards

For the second year, the Friends of the Luria Library are offering the Eli Luria Book Scholarship for students needing help with the steep cost of books.

Scholarship awards vary between $200 for students that are enrolled in six to 11 units and $400 for students that are enrolled in 12 units or more. The money will go toward City College bookstore credit.

“I think it’s great. Books have become so expensive,” said Librarian M’Liss Garza. “When you hear that a student is paying $150 for a textbook, you think, ‘My gosh, they have to buy more than one book,'” Garza said.

Applications are available at the information desk in the library. To qualify for the scholarships students must complete the application, write two short essays and demonstrate financial need.

“Last year 10 students received awards,” Garza said.

The application and essays must be turned in by Nov. 3 at the information desk in the library.
