The annual kick-off of concert season at City College starts with the performance of the Faculty Chamber Concert on October 8.
Both full and part-time faculty members of the music department have met to rehearse the pieces they will be playing and singing at Fé Bland Forum for this year’s show.
The concert will consist entirely of classical works, including songs by American composer Aaron Copland, which will be performed by Don Krueger’s “Faculty Chorus.”
This show has become a tradition which validates for students that teachers are competent and talented.
“They aren’t just a bunch of instructors,” said Dr. John Clark, Head of the Music Department, “they can actually perform all this stuff, and they can do it well.”
As a result, the only prerequisite to being in the show is being a part of our music faculty.
Some of the members who will be participating include Josephine Brummel, Linda Holland, Don Krueger and Margaret Hontos.
Mikey Evans, music major and tenor in City College’s Chamber Singers, said that he was really looking forward to this year’s performance.
“How could you miss out on something like this?” he asked, “I mean what if your voice teacher totally botched his solo?” he added grinning.
Although it may not be Mikey’s number one reason for going to the Faculty Chamber Concert, many attendees will be going because they want to see their teachers and mentors up on stage doing exactly what it is that they are talking about in the classroom everyday.
“I really think it would be a lot of fun to see the teachers that you deal with all the time having fun and performing something that they want to perform,” said Tarah Dang, a student in Dr. Clark’s songwriting class.
Fun is exactly what a lot of these teachers are planning to have. Don Krueger, lab tech over at the music department, has even taken on the title of “self-proclaimed cheerleader of the event.” He is also in charge of a great deal of the promotion for the show.
“We put on a lot of shows every year,” said Clark, “we’ve got brass, jazz, singer/songwriter, and all kinds of combos, but this is our only all-faculty one and it’s all classical; it’s a real good one and I’m looking forward to it.”
