If one of your many “things-to-do-before-you-die” is to enjoy Salma Hayek’s curves, set aside some time to enjoy the new movie “After the Sunset.” If you are looking for a good storyline and wonderful acting, consider saving your money.
The story is about Max the diamond thief (Pierce Brosnan) and Lola, his girlfriend and partner-in-crime (Hayek), enjoying their new retirement in the Caribbean.
Max’s nemesis, FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson) and the local crime boss (Don Cheadle) pressure Max to consider completing his diamond collection by stealing the last of the three Napoleon Diamonds.
The diamond happens to conveniently be arriving to the island aboard a new cruise ship. Max completes his mission but throws love and careful foresight away.
There are so many bland corny references to sex, lust and romance throughout this film.
“He said I have the best backside he has ever seen,” said Lola, referring to her tennis instructor. “That is backhand, my dear,” retorts Max.
It even goes to the extreme when Max and Lloyd spend a half-naked night together.
Hayek obviously knows she is a sex object on screen, and her acting suffers as a result. Brosnan plays the intelligent thief role well, but his romantic chemistry with Hayek fizzles.
Director Brett Ratner attempts the cliché of “cops-and-robbers” between Max and Lloyd in many scenes, but misses out in any form of character development.
Rent this movie if you enjoy slow-paced love stories about thieves. See it in the theaters if you want more of Salma Hayek.
