Vaquero quarterback Brandon Thomas broke his collarbone Saturday in a sloppy 32-20 loss at West L.A and will be out for the remainder of the season.”This is a big loss for us,” said head coach Reggie Bolton. “We are going to be missing a lot of versatility and leadership now with Brandon going down.”City College had six turnovers, four were interceptions and two were ran back for touchdowns. Thomas injured his shoulder on a 14-yard scramble near midfield after falling behind 13-0. “Turnovers hurt us bad,” Bolton said. “We had a hard time tackling as well.”After Thomas went down in the second quarter, Vaquero backup quarterback Preston Maloney sparked the offense with a touchdown strike to Herbie Smith before the half, and again for a 62-yard bomb early in the third quarter for a 14-13 lead.Smith caught five passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Maloney was intercepted three times and completed only 9-of-26 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Oilers took the lead at the end of the third quarter 20-14 and didn’t look back, scoring two more touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter.”We need to work harder,” Bolton said. “We play a much better team this weekend and we need to work hard in practice this week to be prepared for Saturday.”City College, who fell to1-1 on the season, will face L.A. Valley Saturday away.
