Vaqueros tie rival Ventura

The Vaqueros squandered an opportunity to step into the Western State Conference North drivers seat Thursday night at La Playa stadium as they gave up an 84th minute goal in a tie with Ventura College.

City College forward Brandie Harris set up an 18-yard Sandy Grimaldo snipe into the top right corner to give City College a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the first half. Ventura forward Breanna Naranjo equalized the game with a header in the 58th minute.

“I’m proud of the girls and the way the girls competed. We created lots of scoring opportunities; it could have been 2-0 in the early going,” said head coach John Sisterson You can always say ‘what if?’ The fact of the matter is we tied and we played well.”

Ventura (7-5-1, 2-0-1 WSC North) out-shot City College (6-2-4, 2-0-2 WSC North) 23-14 but both teams ended with ten shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Justine Silva made it 2-1 off a rebound from a Grimaldo shot in the 70th minute.

“I saw Sandy going wide,” said Silva. “So I got on the back side just in case and I got the goal.”

Both teams were given a yellow card after an aggressive battle for a through-ball. City College’s Kayla Campbell and Ventura’s A.J. Tewes were written up.

“As soon as that ball goes in the air it’s a 50-50 ball so it was difficult,” said Silva. “But we still tried to fight as hard as we could and keep our heads up. It was a very intense game.”

The game came to a tie in the last six minutes when Daisy Cardona headed in a rebound off a corner kick past Vaquero goalkeeper Briana Robinson. Robinson made a total of eight saves in the game.

“Its disappointing in the way they ended up tying the game,” head coach John Sisterson said. “They had us back on our heels and we just didn’t deal with it in the box. Ventura is a very competitive team.”

The Vaqueros have six more matches before the Southern California Regional finals and take on Hancock at 1 p.m. at La Playa Stadium next Tuesday.
