City College’s battle against Chaffey’s women’s soccer team ended 2-2 Friday afternoon, putting the first blemish on the Vaqueros’ record.

The Vaqueros (4-0-1) endured an onslaught of second half Chaffey (2-1-1) shots and to remain unbeaten.

“We were anticipating for this game to be the toughest one yet,” said head coach John Sisterson. “This team is very competitive but we did our homework on them.”

The Chaffey Panthers where off to a fast start, with two first-half goals from Angie Herbst and Jasmine Medina, who scored off a rebound from a corner kick.

Herbst’s was the first person to score on Vaquero freshman goaltender Brianna Robinson this season, ending her shutout streak at four games. Robinson was honored as last weeks WSC player of the week for her stellar play.

One minute after Chaffey’s second score, Brandie Harris passed a through ball to Sandy Grimaldo who put it into the top left corner of the net for a goal.

Freshman midfielder, Samantha Maxwell, kept the pressure on Chaffey’s defense with three scoring opportunities in the first half, including one off a corner kick. All of Maxwell’s attempts were held out by Chaffey defense.

Grimaldo headed in a second goal from an assist by Harris in the 58 minute to tie the game.

Harris’s goal streak snapped at four games, but her assists kept her point streak alive.

She remains one of the leagues top scorers with sixteen points on the season (6 goals, 2 assists).

Chaffey pummeled the Vaqueros in shots 16-3 in the first half and 10-5 in the second.

“The game was tough at first but we got through it,” Grimaldo said. “We didn’t expect them to come off so strong as they lost to Taft 3-0 so we came out pretty confident.”

The Vaqueros previously beat Taft College handedly 3-0.

The expectations are high for this squad after last season’s 16-3-0 record that earned them a school record for wins in a season and a WSC championship.

“The girls have bonded really well as a unit this year and they believe in themselves,” Sisterson said. “Because the girls get along so well with each other they usually are successful with scoring more goals than the other team.”

The Vaqueros travel to East L.A. College today for a 6 p.m. match.
