Ventura bashes Lady Vaqs playoff hopes

Playoff hopes are alive but waning for the SBCC women’s basketball team following a 73-43 loss to visiting Ventura (26-1, 9-0) Saturday.

Shooting woes were the storyline. City College shot just 27 percent for the game.  A total of 32 Vaquero turnovers gave the Pirates plenty of scoring opportunities.

“To beat Ventura, you have to play a perfect game,” said head coach Sandrine Krul. “I’m proud of the way our girls played. We just didn’t execute—and it cost us the game.”

Vaquero Jasmine Johnson scored 11,  and Jennifer Jimenez contributed with 8 points and 9 rebounds.

The loss drops the Lady Vaqueros to 4-4 in conference play, but playoff hope is still alive. Their strong schedule plays to their favor.

City College hosts Hancock 5 p.m. today in the annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” night. Proceeds for the game go to the American Cancer Society.
